A CONTEMPORARY MEDIUM
Oil pastels are a fairly added art medium. In the mid 1920’s, the first soft pastel was developed. Called Cray-pas, this soft pastel was considered an modernize from crayons. It wasn’t until 1947, concerning the demand of the artists Pablo Picasso and Henri Goetz, the materials manufacturer Sennelier set approximately to create a soft, artists’ character pastel.
Picasso wanted a pastel fasten that could be used almost a variety of surfaces, taking into account wood, clay or canvas. The pigments in hard pastels, oil pastels and oil sticks are the same as those used in oil paints. The necessary difference in addition to oil paints, hard and soft pastels and oil sticks is the binder ingredient used to grip the pigments together. Oil paints are basically pigments in a base of linseed oil and exposure agents, liquid enough to be extruded from a tube. Hard pastels have less oil and wax binder than oil pastels. Oil pastels, having more oil and wax content, are softer in consistency and body. To date, oil pastels are to hand in two qualities: student and professional.
HARD AND SOFT – THE DIFFERENCE
Chalk or hard pastels have been in the region of longer past the Renaissance. (Leonardo DaVinci wrote approximately pastels and many of his drawings were finished in red chalk.) Hard pastels can be blended taking into account the finger or considering a little blending affix to fabricate subtle shadings of subtle and delicate shading and emphasize effects. Because of their complex, sober consistency, they are powdery, semi-transparent and excellent for creating serene, “seamless” transitions of color.
